Alex is a treasure of archeology, hiding underneath many stratums and we must discover him in a subtle manner, slowly, without being scared by his apparent roughness. Just like an archeologist, using a small brush, we must be able to give him life without destroying him. We must approach him the opposite way he will present himself and with lots of kindness and patience. This is how I did it, and finally I have learned how to love him. First, because of his entire support to the movie. There is no Cap Tourmente movie without Alex. The others would not stand out alone, without his energy and recklessness, good or bad...He dares to do things when others are only procrastinating. ![]() To prove it, I will refer to the following scene. When he is undoing his mothers hair, he caresses her neck and he speaks to her like a lover would : " Mom, you are beautiful ; I dont understand why my father did not love you more... " meaning that him, Alex, would have given her all his love, the total love that she deserved. It is a very moving scene, almost incestuous. Oedipus tenderly in love, Alex will throw his mother in an uneasy emotional situation that Alfa notices right away and pulls him away from her. Langlois has a real talent to show us the intimacy between the characters in this special scene, with an almost invisible thread...It is in the movement of their arms and hands.... Starting when Alex caressing his mother is drawn away by his sister...Alex left hand holds on his mothers shoulder, Alfa sliding down her hand along her brothers back, will take his hand inviting him for a dance. Alex walking near Jean-Louis will lay his hand on him while his face caressing his neck, Jean-Louis will grab Alexs neck leaving his hand slide down in a continuous movement. Then its the brother and sister tango. Their eyes and entire bodies are welded together. A languid exchange which is a painful and passionate recall of their desire, leaving them in a troubled state. During his career, Roy has rendered many characters who were able to switch on their partners desire. Alex is a complex one ; he is a poem and nothing will stop him. He is amoral, so he has no barriers, always in search of love, but an impossible love. To him, love becomes an absolute goal, and nothing is left for others. He is like the wind, rushing through the land, non stop, caressing, tearing apart, eroding others, modeling them while remaining himself. He is both violent and gentle without spending too much time with each situation. Maybe I am a little rough with him, because he did invest himself when younger. He lived in a dream world. His childhood was his kingdom. Perhaps that is why he is now unable to forget it, to mature. The piano scene will prove this, creating a perfect harmony between the ONeils, Alfa, Alex and their mother : Elise Guilbault, Roy and Andrée Lachapelle. Alex sitting at the piano, while his sister holds her mother by the waist and the mother holds them back by their shoulders, the trio sings. Their eyes are full of joy and look as if reflected like a mirror. Alex leaning back to assure his mother presence. They are in heaven ! They dont need the rest of the world, going in osmosis, in a symbiotic state, For them, it is the movie climax. At last together listening to the music of happy times, signing melodies in their own world of personal souvenirs. Alexs mood will be revealed by the accent of the cello. ![]() Alexs mood will be revealed by the accent of the cello. The cello, this woman with a deep voice, which makes Alex unable to get the vibration wished out of it. But he still cherish the instrument, keeping it close to him, even laid it on him in the hammock, reminding him of his childhood... |
The instrument that he will break by smashing it against Barbaras bike near the end of the movie. Again love and hatred. Unable to live his ambivalent nature therefore hurting people around him. And specially Jean-Louis. He will always interfere between him and the rest of them. He is attracted by him but does not know how to go about it.
So he will try to provoke Jean-Louis to find out what his real feelings are. But at the end of the movie, Jean-Louis will finally meet Alex face to face, in a beautiful scene taking place in the kitchen with the mother watching helpless. Again this is a remarkable interpretation by Roy. He is not saying a word but watch his face, when he is leaning against the wall and Jean-Louis is defying him. If you have the video, go to that sequence and watch it again. Jean-Louis will attack first: - And you, who do you love?...Of course, you don't know what it means...You pissed me off with your soul searching! Alex's answer will be on the expression of his face. He will smile, getting uneasy, anguished, steam is building up...Jean-Louis keeps the pressure on by staring at him. His dark eyes get into the deep waves of Roy's ocean green eyes...He's looking for an exit, can not find any and starts to lose control.... Jean-Louis comes back again: Have you ever said to someone that you love her? Well, you will tell me that you love me! I'll make you spit it out! Holding Alex by the neck, he shakes him out saying: - It will just be another lie! Alex will reply with two blows from his right, one at the abdomen, the other on the chin. Third clash: -Go ahead, kill me! That's what you want? Don't miss me, because I won't! Jean-Louis had just scored a TKO. The expression on Roy's face falls apart. His soul will capsize like a broken ship, he can not hold on to anything...He is in rage, his heart is wounded, invaded by sadness, anguished, in a torment...in a split second, he takes us in his torment. So the movie title is proper: "The Cape of Torments". ![]()
Roy's talent will always be to take you with him as you can easily feel it in this last scene. Once again his talent is well above the power of words and gestures, but rather in the essence of imagination which he is able to capture. His inside light is always lit for us and it goes right through the spectator, freely, generously. Roy gave a lot in Cap Tourmente, he must have been inspired by the quality of the actors around him and by Michel Langlois, painter of the soul.. So, he is equal to Alex, either a poet or a bewitched muse...sailing away with a majesticand impetuous wind. |
